Modern design meets Goan heritage

Luxury Homes in Goa by The Chapter

When we think of Goa, we often think of its Portuguese heritage. After all, the state was a colony of the Portuguese for several centuries. They brought with them many tangible and intangible things. One of those happened to be an architectural influence. But this was not a simple task. Quickly the Portuguese realised that their architecture will have to be adapted to the local climate – hot, humid, tropical and a very intense monsoon season. And over time, this phenomenon evolved a new style of architecture in the subcontinent. Soon the Portuguese began to develop large scale buildings in addition to impressive private homes for the officers deputed in the state for its administration, in this new style, which was aptly called Goan-Portuguese architecture.

Goan-Portuguese architecture is characterized by certain features that are unique to it – vibrant colors, ornate balconies, and features like ‘balcaos’ or verandas, terracotta tile roofs, and oyster shell windows. Each of these features were created to create an environment that was suitable to the lifestyle of residents as well as the climate of the region. The roofs, windows etc. were designed to keep the homes warm in the hot months and insulated during cooler months as well as the monsoon season. The balconies were often used to signify social status as well as to establish importance. At the same time the colours that were used were chosen to signify social status as well as to keep homes cool, especially during the hotter months.

Homes were often situated on large plots, and usually came with an outhouse or a shed that was used to house animals. Additionally many homes featured wells that were used as a source of water for the whole family and sometimes even the larger community. Apart from these structures homes in colonial times often featured religious symbols or small chapels or grottos. This was especially common amongst the nobility that chose to live in smaller communities rather than with the common folk. Unlike other parts of the country, Goa did not become famous for ornate palaces or large scale monuments. This is primarily because the Portuguese chose to be more practical in their approach to development. They prioritised trade and religion. Hence building homes for colonial officials was an important project that was undertaken by the government and building of churches for the local community was given as much importance. This preference determined the architectural landscape of the region.

But enough of the old. Today Goa is an integral part of India and the local culture along with the architecture are more aligned with trends that are relevant to the nation as well as the latest around the globe. Goan architecture has come a long way, which is to say that practicality, quality and aesthetics have begun to play an even more important role. Today many cities and towns in Goa showcase modern buildings and homes. Even the lesser populated regions play host to more modern and contemporary structures.

Over the years, especially in the last two decades, Goa has become a preferred destination for wealthy individuals looking for a quiet retreat. After all, Goa has a lot to offer, for the common man and for those with uncommon taste.

Modern designs and contemporary styles have begun to crop up everywhere. New homes in Goa now sport international-grade aesthetics and come with the latest in conveniences.

Today modern design is one of the most well-known styles in interior design – this style that emerged in the 1920s still inspires interiors worldwide. This famous style can sometimes be mistakenly associated with Contemporary Style. And even though the words modern and contemporary are synonymous, the styles aren’t.

In interior design, the Modern Style creates functional spaces with a delightful aesthetic. The Bauhaus philosophy and architecture inspire the style, highlighting the use of clean lines, geometric form, and natural materials. Modern style in interiors evokes a simple yet elegant lifestyle. Modern style is related to the age of machination – throughout the first half of the 20th century, it continuously increased in popularity. At the same time, the contemporary doesn’t have a specific period because it is constantly evolving as the people, culture, and times change – reflecting the style in vogue in the present. In other words, we could say that the contemporary style highlights what is happening at a specific time, which is also a fluid style that changes as society evolves. Conversely, the modern style will always be identified by the same aesthetic that highlights nude hues, clean lines, and balance.

In Goa, both these styles tend to get local touches. Which is to say that the designs are adapted to the local climate and you will also find hints of the past sprinkled all over. Making this version of modern style even more distinct and unique to the region.

Today many newer Goan homes are built using local materials but are built in a very modern style. In some cases, you will also see a more traditional style of architecture but on the inside it is supported by modern technology or conveniences. Overall it seems as if the Goans are very dedicated to their understanding of the local climate and traditions, this dedication is manifested in the way new homes are built across the state. And instead of blindly following international trends there is a conscious effort to localise international styles so it is more relevant to the people who inhabit it. In many ways homes being built in Goa today are evocative of the past and yet sit comfortably in today’s era. Making this phenomenon a unique one that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
